I love her so much, and if I spent the time in this review talking about why, I'd probably exceed the character limit, so just know that if you're a Zofia stan, this book will not disappoint. Zofia was, as she has been the entire time, my favourite character. I really enjoyed the beginning few chapters from Séverin's POV, having to manage a careful balancing act between trying to gain Ruslan's trust and making sure his plan to reunite with his friends and travel to the Plague Island goes accordingly.
Two of note, though, have to be Séverin and, of course, Zofia. I could write paragraphs and paragraphs about all the other characters here, but I don't think anyone particularly wants to read that. Laila spends most of the book reconciling with her feelings for Séverin, and I both loved and hated it – loved it because it shows just how complex Chokshi's characters are, and hated it because you can't help but want all these characters to be happy and okay. Usually she's the warmer, calmer one of the group (the mother figure), but her pain in the beginning few chapters was clear to see. Likely reeling the hardest from Séverin's would-be betrayal, I enjoyed seeing a different side of Laila here.
